In South Asia Shilajit is widely found in Himalayan Mountains bordering Nepal, India and Tibet and also several other mountains like Aravallis, Vindhyasa, Western Ghats etc. Shilajit found in Himalayan Mountains are considered to be of best quality due to the low temperature. It works like a refrigerator preserving the quality of Shilajit. Moreover when shaljit oozes out of interior rocks it comes into contact with ice as Himalayan mountains are always covered with ice so there is not much chemical reaction with metals found in the soil. In case of shilajit from other sources the raw shilajit comes to extensive contact with soil leading to certain chemical reactions which deteriorate the quality of shilajit.
 
 

It is also collected continually due to avalanches and glaciers. Though shilajit is also found in cold mountain ranges of urals, caucuses and Tien Shan in Russia it is generally found to be of inferior quality as compared to the Shilajit found in Himalayan Mountains. There are some other substances that closely resemble Shilajit. In traditional Chinese medicines fossilized resins like amber are considered to be closely related to Shilajit when it comes to medicinal properties.
