We do receive emails from
our customers - both current and prospective asking us if our Shilajit
contains heavy metals. Way back in 2004 some laboratories randomly checked
some herbal products, one of them being our Syncom Shilajit and found that
our shilajit was containing high levels of lead metal.
It is important to note
that our Syncom Shilajit was found to contain NO other heavy metal but
only "lead".
We would categorically and
firmly deny that. Our Syncom Shilajit does not contain lead metal beyond
permissible limits. We use the word permissible limits ( 10 parts per billion
- 10 PPB) because technically the word zero cannot be used. Even the best
of packaged mineral water, prescription medicines from multi billion dollar
pharmaceutical conglomerates or any packaged food contains lead - but within
permissible limits. We are not talking about the tap water that feeds our
homes, hospitals and laboratories. That is the main issue which we will
see in detail.
Where does lead contamination
come from?
Lead is a modern day phenomenon.
Fresh farm soil or high mountains of Himalayas contain no lead at all.
Lead contamination occurs due to three main sources
1) Lead is added to gasoline
as an antiknock additive. Lead in gasoline prevents uncontrolled inflammation
and bursting of gasoline in engines of motor vehicles.
2) Lead is widely
added as a solvent in paints and varnishes.
3) The pipelines that
supply water to our homes - both from public utilities to our homes
as well as within our homes are the main source of lead contamination in
our water.
Lead contaminated drinking
water is a major problem in houses. It was a practice to use lead pipes
very commonly in homes till 1930's. Even today lead pipes are commonly
used to transport water from public utilities( the municipal reservoirs/dams/water
purification systems ) to homes, offices, hospitals and laboratories. Lead
pipes are not used within homes from 1930's onwards but as on today almost
all the pipelines that supply water within our homes have lead soldering.
Copper pipes have replaced lead pipes in most residential plumbing. However,
the use of lead solder with copper pipes is widespread. Experts regard
this lead solder as the major cause of lead contamination of household
water in U.S. homes today. New brass faucets and fittings can also
leach lead, even though they are "lead-free.
Result? The
water that is supplied to our homes, hospitals, laboratories etc. contain
very very high levels of lead. This problem is happening in
almost every home and hospital in America, Europe and almost everywhere
in the world. Lucky ones are those in the underdeveloped countries who
directly carry their water home from wells.
Search for "Lead in water"
in
google and you will find millions of pages with information.
No one - be it government,
non governmental agencies, public nor the media want to talk about this.
This major issue is being brushed under the carpet. The reason is that
it is not easy to replace all the pipelines that supply water to our homes.
It is not easy to dig up pipelines running cumulatively to millions of
kilometers and replace them. And replace them with what? As on today there
is no cost effective alternative to lead soldering in the pipelines.
The United States Environmental
Protection Agency http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead/lead1.html
has some interesting information in this regard.
As
on today there is high levels of lead contamination in water supplied to
every home, hospital & laboratory in America, Europe and anywhere in
the world.
What about the lead in
our Syncom Shilajit? What about about the testing done by some labs?
Some laboratories have tested
our Shilajit way back in 2004 and found high levels of lead in it. Unfortunately
they have managed to create an impression that we are externally pumping
lead in to our Shilajit. Why would we or anyone ever do it? Ours is an
ISO 9002 manufacturing setup. We have local Food And Drug Administration
license and our company is traded in the stock market.
Did these labs that tested
our Shilajit make any mistake?
No absolutely not. They
did test our Shilajit and did find lead metal in higher levels. We see
no fault with their findings. But just as most of us are not aware that
there are high levels of lead in the water supplied through pipelines,
these laboratories too were either not aware or did not give importance
to the lead in the water.
When these labs take up our
Shilajit for testing (or anything for that matter) there are a series of
procedure to be followed. They add water to the shilajit, centrifuge it
(mixing in very high speed to get a homogeneous solution) and subject it
to spectrometric testing. Each element (metal) in the periodic table has
a distinct molecular structure and characteristic. Each metal scatter light
in a particular wavelength and frequency. Based on this it is possible
to calculate the metallic content in any solution.
Now please note that for
testing the labs use water in every stage and the water contains lead.
In fact the laboratories use hot/warm water and this is even more of an
aggravating factor. Water at higher temperature can leech more lead from
the solder joints of pipelines. Moreover the labs use distilled water in
many cases. This can be even more aggravating. Distilled water is made
by boiling the water, vaporizing it and condensing it. This process too
need pipelines in every stage and at such a high temperature it will leech
even more lead from the joints.
We have seen that during
spectrometric testing Shilajit is mixed with water and this water contains
very high levels of lead. A small amount of shilajit is mixed with
large amount of water. During testing it will show high levels of lead.
This lead was then shown as the lead in our Shilajit.
It is not the lead in
our Shilajit but the lead in the water that is being shown in the results.
Why our Shilajit? If these
laboratories test anything for that matter it will show high lead contamination.
For absolutely no fault of
ours we had to suffer loss of reputation for sometime back in 2004. We
contacted these labs several times and informed them of the fundamental
error they were making. They promised to look into it and re test if needed.
We never heard from these particular labs again. But one thing we never
saw any reports them from again about our shilajit or any other supplement/herbal
medicine regarding high levels of lead.
Many are taking our shilajit
right from 1978 onwards ( that was the time we set up our factory) to this
date. Many are octogenarians who are full of energy and vigor. I have been
personally taking it for past 12 years.
We would request all our
esteemed customers to study this matter before arriving at any conclusion.
